On July 31, 2019, the Endocrine Society published new clinical practice guidelines for the primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The global rise in these diseases is a complex health challenge, and these revised guidelines represent another step towards disease prevention. The guidelines focus on screening of adults aged 40 to 75 years for five metabolic risk factors that are known to increase risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes: elevated blood pressure, increased waist circumference, elevated fasting triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and elevated glycaemia.
