Sorethroat or pharyngitis is a common occurrence. It can be due to bacterial or viral cause. Antibiotics is required when it is a bacterial cause.

Criteria for acute bacterial pharyngitis:

  • Fever
  • Tonsillar exudate (pus)
  • Tender, swollen lymph nodes around the front of your neck
  • Absence of cough

So, don’t always ask for antibiotics unless you have at least 3 of the 4 criteria.
