Editorial Comments:

Product Description
Germ Guardian Air Sanitizer model EV9-102 destroys airborne bacteria, viruses, and germs and significantly reduces mold and fungal spores. This new product uses ultraviolet-C energy (UV-C), which has proven to be effective in commercial and industrial applications for many years. A powerful yet quiet fan sanitizes the air in a typical 10'x20' room. The Germ Guardian is not an ionizing air cleaner and does not produce ozone. Germ Guardian's powerful fan moves germ-filled air into the chamber where the germs are bombarded with light from the UV-C module. Only Germ Guardian has a reflective aluminum sterilization chamber, which intensifies the effect of the UV-C light. The result is a filter-free unit that destroys airborne germs - more than filters can trap or low-level UV-C lights can destroy - and flows cleaned air back into the room. This small unit is designed to sit on a table or desk. Blue glowing rings indicate that the product is at work. You can vary the air flow using a control with limitless settings. The stainless steel and aluminum unit is virtually indestructible, safe for use around children and pets, and cool to the touch.

4 out of 5 stars Works for specific problems.   December 9, 2008
This is not a general air cleaner. It will not filter dust at all. I would recommend using a HEPA filter if you suffer from allergies. On the other hand, that also means that the Germ Guardian has no filters to clean or replace.

What it does do is blast viruses and bacteria with UV light to break them up and render them harmless. The advertising is correct: my wife works in a lab, and this is the same method of air sterilization used in hospitals and labs. The narrow tube in the middle of the Germ Guardian ensures that the air moving through it passes close to the UV light bulb and anything in it gets a strong dose of high-energy light. The slow fan speed also ensures that they spend a decent amount of time under the light. This is a feature, not a bug.

The good news is, once they're dead, they're dead. Unless you have someone constantly sneezing and coughing right next to you, I wouldn't worry about how quickly it filters. Just leave it running for a while, and the air you breathe will have far fewer living critters in it.

I've owned mine for 3 years and while I can't prove that it's responsible, it does seem to work. The build quality is great, and it looks like they've added new colors to the line, in addition to "sci-fi stainless".

Four stars only because it could be a little quieter.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you work in an office!   December 6, 2008
I bought my Germ Guardian over two years ago and it continues to run without problems. My administrative assistant laughed and made all sorts of jokes about it in my office but after she was out sick three times to my none, she didn't think it so silly anymore!

I would recommend this for an single room, office or cubicle setting. We also have a Honeywell UV in the home HVAC for the whole house. We have been very healthy for some time until recently when I noticed that the bulb burned out. Coincidence?

I have the stainless steel model. It is very well built. It looks like some kind of Star Trek device. I wanted the metal housing because the UV rays will break down the plastic housing of other units over time.

I have purchased 3 of these Germ Gaurdians. The chrome one for the living room (also comes in other colors) and it definitely cleans the air etc. I have 2 of the table top machine, one for the computer room and one in the bedroom. I sleep much better at night because the air is fresh and clean and clear to breathe fresh air while sleeping is great. I feel the Germ Gaurdian is worth the money. The larger unit has a 5 yr warranty, compared to others only having a 1-2 yr warranty. I highly recommend either of these units. My grand-daughters even tell me how much better the air is and how much cleaner the house smells.

4 out of 5 stars Research UV-C before you rate this poor...its a very good product with some limitations   October 18, 2008

This product works to STERILIZE air by destroying bacteria and mold spores DNA and does so well...if you are looking for something to remove particulate matter i'd buy a rabbit air by mitsubishi...OUTSTANDING PRODUCT FOR THE PRICE or IQ Air, BluAir, or Austin which are also outstanding but plan to spend some bucks for those units....this UV unit makes an EXCELLENT supplement....to those who complain about the low fan speed, if you research UV-C you'll understand why the fan speed is somewhat low which in turn does create less air exchange. The product does not claim to clean germs and mold in the air in a 200sqft space more than once in an hour.....which obviously by most air purifier standards is extremely minimal...BUT...find me a better machine at killing mold toxins and bacteria at the DNA level? Bacteria and mold need time in the aluminum lined light chamber to be destroyed so the germ guardian air exchange is low to allow the unit to perform its job while the aluminum intensifies the strength of the light. UV will also destroy some VOC's but not remove particulate matter (dust). The bottom line is this product WORKS to KILL MOLD AND BACTERIA VERY WELL! If you are trying to sterilize a large space (more than 200sqft) I would add this a supplement to a larger machine or buy two. Again, EXCELLENT device if you are looking to STERILIZE your air!...if dust, dander, and other particulates are an issue buy a rabbit and buy this to sterilize.

1 out of 5 stars Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, "most home air purifiers fall short"   August 14, 2008

UV purifiers. These devices rely on ultraviolet light to neutralize biological contaminants. Experts agree that UV light is effective in destroying microbes such as bacteria, dust mites and mold spores, given sufficient exposure time. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), however, most home air purifiers fall short: "Bacterial spores would require a relatively long time under the light for the light to have a killing effect. Most household air cleaners move air too quickly to provide adequate exposure time." Without the addition of a filter and fan, UV purifiers are ineffective against particles such as dust, pollen and pet dander, and some experts have raised concerns about the safety of UV units in household settings.
