BEWARE of INFECTIONS! March 4, 2008
Inserting the Today Sponge is like putting a huge foam donut inside of you. It really is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Luckily, though, it was soft and my boyfriend did not notice any difference in feeling. The loop used to remove the sponge is also huge and not very discreet. After an hour or so of wearing it, I began experiencing a mild burning sensation near my cervix. I wore it overnight and removed it in the morning, at which point, the burning was more intense. The sensation lasted even after I removed the sponge. Two days later, I was urinating blood, and had an expensive visit to the emergency room to get antibiotics for an extraordinarily painful urinary tract infection. I highly recommend that if you try this product you pay close attention to any unusual sensations and remove it immediately if you feel any discomfort.
Also, you must continue to wear it for several hours after intercourse which can be inconvenient. This product might work for you if you only have intercourse once in a great while. However, it would not be reasonable to use on a regular basis since you would have these harsh spermicidal chemicals inside of you so often - it would cause a lot of irritation. Also, try it on a Monday so if you DO get a UTI, you can avoid a pricey e-room visit by going to your regular doctor. Good luck.
