Surprisingly accurate and convenient. September 4, 2008 I couldn't be happier with my choice of the Omron HJ-112 over one of the more basic models.
This unit tracks not only regular steps and miles but also aerobic steps (10 minutes at 60 steps/minute continuously) and estimates calories burned (though calories are only a rough estimation, of course). In addition, it stores this data for each of the last 7 days, resetting to zero at midnight (I believe). It doesn't adjust to DST as only the time is set, not the date.
It's very easy to use. It's also easy enough to set up if you follow the instructions but it isn't particularly intuitive. The only things you need to enter are the time (to keep track of the days), your weight (to track calories), and the length of your stride (to calculate miles). The most complicated aspect is measuring your stride, and even this isn't especially difficult, but there's no way around it if you care to have it calculate miles with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
Which brings me to to the most important feature:
I tested it several times while counting my steps through my house (about 100 steps each time) with ocassional turns and each time the pedometer came up with the same number of steps as I counted (or at least within one or two). I tried it both clipped to my wasteband and carrying it in my purse. I'm more than satisfied with its accuracy. It doesn't claim to be accurate with irregular movements (such as shuffling through a crowed train station or playing tennis), but I wouldn't expect this.
I have not tested the accuracy of the mile counter but I will one day.
As for convenience, one of my favorite features is that I can leave it in my purse and it will still count my steps. You only have to secure it in a place where it will be positioned acceptably. For instance, it will not work lying flat.
My least favorite part, and this is a minor issue, is that although the unit itself is fairly compact, it's slightly bulky with the clip attached. But it weighs less than 2 or 3 quarters so this too is a small price to pay. The belt clip seems sturdy, as does the unit itself. The strap clip is highly questionable and it works unconventionally, but it isn't an essential element (I'm assuming it's just for added security if you carry it in a loose bag or pocket) and can be replaced with something else.
For me, the pros FAR outweigh any minor cons, which are not even real cons -- just things I personally wish were different.
Best pedometer ever September 3, 2008 I love this pedometer. This is my 4th different pedometer and I have finally found one I like. With the extra strap it never falls off and I like seeing what I've done for the past 7 days as well. I also like the fact that I can put it in my pocket and it still works. I highly recommend it.
Terrific pedometer. September 2, 2008 This is a great pedometer for the money. It keeps track of steps, miles, calories, and kilometers for the day and gives a weekly total. It is easy to set up and stays securely with 2 clips on your waist or in your pocket. I know several people who use this brand and everyone swears by it.
Omron HJ-112 Digital Premium Pedometer September 1, 2008 This is an awesome exercise tool. Extremely accurate, well made and easy to carry. I would recommend this for everyone.
For myself August 31, 2008 Been wanting to buy a pedometer for quite some time now. I have no regrets with this model! What I like about it is that you can keep it in your bag and it will still measure steps accurately. Also the memory is good to look back at your previous days performance.
