Fantastic! January 21, 2008 I have completed the AMEDD course at Ft. Sam Houston and these books in combination with what I learned at AMEDD helped me pass my exam. Just took it this past December and received high marks on my results. I strongly recommend to anyone who has been trained in the military program looking for a training aid prior to taking the exam.

Best Review Text September 12, 2006 5 out of 5 found this comment useful.
I completely disagree with the previous review. I was certified in 2003 and had bought this book and the accompanying math text and thought they were excellent (my lowest percentage was a 92 on any section of the test). I've also used parts of this book to teach certification reviews for others (and they ALL passed). The best part of this text in my opinion is how it doesn't bore you with excessive details that you don't need to know as a technician and gives you a quick and excellent overview of what you need to know for the exam. I don't think it was to generalized in the least. Obviously you may know the information in some sections but hopefully if you are going to take the exam you aren't starting from scratch with pharmacy knowledge regardless of which text you use. I also speak from an experienced perspective as I was a science major in college as well as preparing to take this exam and had no complaints with it...I wish I had more textbooks just like it! We primarily used the Delmar text that was referred to in certification reviews I helped teach as well (much to my dismay) and I thought that it (Delmar) was a giant waste of time as did the students. If you want a textbook with WAY more information than you need (and most of it is wrong) then Delmar is what you want. If you want a short and to the point text that doesn't bore you like a regular text I definitely suggest this APhA book.
Far too generalized to prepare an individual for the exam... November 15, 2002 46 out of 48 found this comment useful.
I am preparing to take the National Pharmacy Technician test. I have sought adequate test preparation materials recently and acquired this book.
One would think that a text published by the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) would most certainly be a great choice for study preparation. But in my opinion, it's not - it is too general to be useful.
Perhaps I am somewhat biased due to my previous pharmacy experience, but I do not need a book that takes entire chapters to generalize how a pharmacy operates.
This book makes generalized statements such as, "Regardless of the role you play in a pharmacy and the type of pharmacy you work in, you will be called on to interact with other people." Well, that's a no-brainer Sherlock. In that particular chapter, 8, the author continues to talk about communication 101 - about encoding and decoding messages and other obvious information.
Out of approximately 200 pages of text, I highlighted perhaps a mere two-dozen sentences.
This book, to me, is far to philosophical to be useful. You will learn the philosophy of pharmacy on the job as you learn and do according to the buisiness of which you are a part.
This book is even more disappointing when compared to its counterpart, APhA's Complete MATH Review for the Pharmacy Technician (ISBN 1-58212-012-9), which focuses specifically on pharmacy math while leaving the philosophy out of the equation. That book, the APhA MATH Review, is an excellent preparation tool, focused and simplified for even the most math-phobic individuals.
And I have reviewed (am studying) another text of which I would actually recommend - Delmar's Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam Review (ISBN 0-7668-0743-6). It omits the generalization and philosophy and even provides helpful "quick study" pages that summarize the most important details of each chapter - something very helpful for those of us who are better at concise memorization.
These are all just my opinions, but I approached each book excited and with an open mind. This book just left me wishing I had spent all of my time in the other books instead.
I gave it 2 stars because the nature of this topic is extensive and deserves points for effort. For what it's worth to you....
------------------------------------ Update: I passed the exam fairly easily. Most math problems I encountered were ratio and proportion-related. The two books (see above) I studied from well-prepared me for what I saw in the math section of the exam.
