A must on the wards July 3, 2006 2 out of 3 found this comment useful.
Always a great help for any medical student or resident, especially in primary care. If you're going to be culturing something, you need to know what to treat empirically with until the C&S comes back, and that's where Sanford's is a great help. It's not quite an ID consult, but it works until they show up.
Great daily reference--in clinic and hospital March 7, 2006 10 out of 10 found this comment useful.
Great quick pocket reference, use it daily for both out-pt and in-pt infectious disease treatment. Details first line therapy (and includes pediatric doses), and gives concise clinical criteria for back-up choices (eg. treatment failures, associated comorbidities, drug allergic patients).
The ID guys never question my antimicrobial choices! If Sanford can't give you an answer, then and only then will you need to call in the ID specialists.
The print is pretty small though, so if you've got poor eyesight, go for the larger print spiral-bound edition.
I just wish I was able to use PDA version...
Great little guide December 18, 2005 10 out of 12 found this comment useful.
One of the definitive texts on "what antibiotic do I use as first line, or second line, or...". takes a little while to get the organization of the text (I got an entire 2 hour class on how to use it in school, which was nice). Be warned, certain resistances (MRSA, for instance) are outpacing annual editions of books. Recommended!

Very good information for any healthcare provider on antimicrobial therapy. The guidelines are solid in treating both acute and severe infections. For parents that have a child presenting with acute otitis media and has failed on high dose amoxicillin, Omnicef oral suspension works very well with both a 5 and 10 day dosing regiment. This extended spectrum cephalosporin is by far the best tasting oral antibiotic on the market today. Compliance with this antibiotic has never been an issue. The Sanford guide mentions the taste as an after thought, however, it is one of the best advantages for parents with a sick child.
All the ID answers you could ever want July 27, 2005 7 out of 12 found this comment useful.
The sanford guide has a wealth of information in it, but it takes some time to become familiar with its organization.
