i was recommended to read this book from a course on dating to help me understand how women and men behave with regard to chosing mates.

it was very easy to read, not too much jargon, i read it every night before bed and finished all 350 pages in about one week, it was one of those you can't put down.

4 out of 5 stars Some ideas on why men and women are different   February 3, 2006

First, why is there sex? The author explores all the ways life has of reproducing itself -- from cloning to two sex reproduction or some life with over 10 genders. Why do humans reproduce using two sexes? What's the advantage over the other methods?

If there are advantages to our method of reproduction utilizing two genders, then how would the genders have specialized to enhance their reproductive success? Why to male deer have pointless antlers? To defeat the other male deer. Why are birds brightly colored even though it makes them more vulnerable to predators? The females like it better. What about people? There are lots of things in the book. It's a good story.

5 out of 5 stars If you've ever been in a relationship - read this!!   January 18, 2006

This book is absolutely fascinating. Be warned - unless you're prepared for some pretty matter-of-fact facts about humans as sexual beings, you're going to be offended by the contents of this book.

This book seeks to recognise common behaviour in both sexes, and compare it to that of the animal kingdom. Ever wondered why we behave so strangely in a relationship? Ever wondered why we feel what we do when we're not in a relationship. Yet again Matt Ridley excels by teaching us popular science in the guise of a fascinating and entertaining book.

Highly highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars the most depressing book you'll ever read, but read it!   January 12, 2006

she's simply gorgeous. she's young and beautiful, with sumptuous breasts, curvatious hips, and a complexion that screams perfection... and she's ALL YOURS. imagine it... you're making out with the girl of your dreams. what could possibly spoil this moment of perfection for you?

but you read *the red queen* last week, didn't you? you can't help thinking that you now know why men are attracted to women with wide hips and narrow waists (wider hips = greater chance of giving birth successfully), large breasts (= more milk to feed the baby). you know that you only like her face becuase you have been "programmed" to favour symmetric features (symmetry is indicative of less genetic errors), and worst of all that the love that you will feel for her is simply nature's answer to the prisoner's dilemma from game theory. (love makes you more likely to co-operate, rather than defect, over bringing up the child). Even that "special" attraction that seems to put her above every other woman you've seen isn't sacred - it too is deliberate - this time becuase your immune system complements her's. The moment is spoilt; your romantic moment has turned into a cross between a science lesson and a horror film.

evolutionary biology is deconstructing sexual desire, and this is the seminal work. but are you ready for it? do you want to go where it will take you? you will find out why there are two sexes, why men like lots of sexual partners, and why women cheat on their husbands with alpha males. to read this book is to take the red pill; you will see sex for what it really is, you will see SELFISH GENES behind everything. ignorance is bliss, but who would want to be ignorant, eh?

5 out of 5 stars Whole concept of mating and evolution is a fascinating topic -   January 10, 2006

And this is one of several books on the market addressing the issue. Others include The Mating Game and Sperm Wars.

This book takes a look at how various species select based on certain genetic types - and helps to explain the rationale and importance of beauty.

The real secret for men is that attraction has more to do with an ability to charm women than do money or looks. Harder to master for some, but ultimately much more effective! Biology bears this out as well.
