A book for the idiot and style professional alike. March 20, 1998 3 out of 3 found this comment useful.
In 85 pages of my grammar book, I learned about 5 million different types of verbs. In 85 pages of The Elements of Style, you learn some grammar you actually USE, as well some writing styles to make you a better writer. In order to understand grammar and style you MUST use grammar and style. Most grammar books don't. The Elements of Style does. It follows it's toughest rule, Omit Needless Words!(Rule Number 17, just in case you wanted to know). Grammar idiots can read this book and become a grammar genius overnight, the writing professional can remain a professional in their writings using this book. If you can only have one grammar book in your lifetime, The Elements of Style is it!
the Bible of good writing February 2, 1998 1 out of 1 found this comment useful.
"The Elements of Style" is the Bible of good writing. Sadly, more students who write graduate research papers in English literature need to read this book.
The Rules Live in Realms Beyond English Prose December 31, 1997 I often coach students on the Internet newsgroups who ask questions about learning computer programming. And I often find myself reciting the 3 Major Design Rules from this book: - Use active voice. - Omit needless words. - Use parallel construction on parallel concepts. No other book hits the Style target closer to dead center than this one.
Get this little book! November 20, 1997 Then read this little book, and practice what it says! Better than many larger books on subject.
Essential book November 13, 1997 1 out of 1 found this comment useful.
If clear language is essential to clear thinking, this is the best thinking book around. Don't be without it!
