5 out of 5 stars Great reference!   September 26, 2008
What can I say? This is a must-have reference for anyone in the nutrition field. It covers all the basics and then some, so it is useful for personal knowledge, professional situations, or research.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid Kathleen Mahan and the products she sells   August 9, 2008

I saw Kathleen Mahan for nutritional advice several months ago, and it was a HORRIBLE experience. She offers questionable advice and does not pay attention to the needs and requests of her patients. I rarely post reviews (positive or negative) but my appointment with her was so terrible that I feel obligated to mention it. If you are considering buying a book that she has co-authored, you should know what sort of person she is, how she runs her business, and what sort of advice she is providing to her patients.

How bad was my experience with her? She was so rude, unprofessional, and unsympathetic that I left her office visibly distraught and in tears. When she billed me for the appointment, I called her and expressed shock that she was billing me, considering it was obvious to both of us that the appointment went extremely poorly. She admitted that she had made several mistakes during the appointment, but insisted that despite these mistakes she had still provided "services" (apparently her "services" include dispensing poor advice and insensitively counseling her patients). Basically, because she spent the time with me - regardless of the *quality* of this time - I had to pay. To me, this is the equivalent of ordering a steak at a restaurant and being served raw meat. When you complain, they still insist you pay full price. After all, technically you were served a steak. Outrageous. Please do not support this woman by purchasing her book.

5 out of 5 stars good resource   July 3, 2008
When I was in school, one of my professors described this book as the "bible of nutrition". I didn't know then that I would be using it as a reference constantly while in school and my internship. I still use it occasionally when I encounter an unusual situation.
