Verbose and Redundant November 19, 2008 This is the required text for the current rotation in my nursing program. I don't know that there are better books out there, but I wish this one wasn't so verbose and redundant. It is a book that is used for only one rotation (half pediatrics, half maternity), but it is as large as the main text we use for the entire rest of the program (as if the large size makes the authors think they really know their stuff).
It feels like at the end of every disease in the "Nursing Management" section is the same information repeated again and again and again: Provide support for the parents, monitor vital signs, meet the child's nutritional needs, etc. with pages and pages spent on this. Books like this should condense their information, as in "most children need x, y, and z" and have that information in a single place. Then it would only be necessary to mention the differences in care that a particular disease has from the main pattern. This would make learning and memorizing easier, drastically reduce the size of the text, and make us pay attention because we know that what's written is only mentioned in one place.
The information is so verbose and redundant that it doesn't seem worth reading for the one different detail buried somewhere in the sea of similar information. I am really considering just reading online continuing education modules or the Merck Manual or the ATI guides that we got for our program.
This book just doesn't seem worth the time necessary to get through its verbosity.
Excellent all around!! September 28, 2007 0 out of 2 found this comment useful.
Shipping time was very quick. Book was in excellent condition, just as described and had all of the required materials with it (CD, etc.). Just as good as the school book store, but at a cheaper price!!
