 Smells Awful...Does it work? November 12, 2008
I just started using this this morning, so I can't comment on it's effectiveness just yet, however, the smell alone is just disgusting. I smell like a railroad tie. I thought it would rinse out, but it hasn't and I'm sitting at work hoping no one approaches me. My co-workers are going to wonder who's paving a driveway. I'm going to stick with this for a week, if I can handle the smell. I don't feel any relief, even though the claim on the box says you will get relief even after one treatment. More to come...

After using t-gel for about 6 months, I can say it truly does work very well. I shampoo about twice a week with t-gel (leaving it in for a few minutes before rinsing) and then follow with my regular shampoo and/or small amount of conditioner. My scalp is flake and itch free, and my hair smells good and is very managable. I love it!

I have troublesome itchy, sometimes tiny little scabs on my scalp (don't know why) but it was very uncomfortable until i found T GEL! It really works. The dermatologist prescribed a shampoo that cost 50 or more dollars for a tiny bottle and T GEL works infinitely better, as well as better than head and shoulders or selsum blue. Try it! It might work for you too!

Cautionary note about me: I typically review books and movies, and these are unfamiliar waters for this dolphin. I apologize if this review is not as polished as those of reviewers well-accustomed to the topic.
Why I need a product like this: At fifteen, I had a diving accident, resulting in a spinal cord injury and paralysis from the shoulders down. One result, of the damage to my neurological system, and/or as a side effect to some of the medications I take, is that I developed Seborrhoeic dermatitis (a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin). With me, it affects my scalp (dandruff) and the skin around the base of my nose.
Why I ended up using this particular product: I have tried many over-the-counter shampoos designed to treat dandruff, including Selsun Blue, Tegrin, Duplex T, and Pentrax, plus a few prescription shampoos, like prescription-strength Nizoral. I had found a fairly effective combination in Nizoral (prescription) and Duplex T (over-the-counter), but then Duplex T became unavailable, at least around here. I switched to Pentrax, but then that became temporarily unavailable. I tried Neutrogena T/Gel, at least until Pentrax became available again (the manufacturer said they were temporarily out-of-stock), but I now have no interest in returning to Pentrax. Here is why:
The Neutrogena T/Gel experience: This shampoo is rather thick and very dark brown in color. It spreads well, though, and lathers up surprisingly well, for a coal tar shampoo. Yes, it is a coal tar shampoo, and that's where the "T" in "T/Gel" comes from. According to the manufacturer's website, it contains 0.5% coal tar. It cleans my hair well, it requires a thorough rinsing, and it leaves my hair neither dry nor oily.
The most noticeable (and attractive, for me) attribute of Neutrogena T/Gel shampoo, though, is the scent. While you can definitely smell the coal tar (a scent I find earthy and pleasant), it also smells of pine or some kind of evergreen. Even as attractiveness does not make a person into a good person, it is equally true that a good scent does not make a shampoo into a good shampoo. It does not hurt, though, does it (in either case)?
No matter how much I liked the scent, I would resume searching the field, if Neutrogena T/Gel was not effective. So far (three months), it has been effective at keeping my dandruff under control. When the Seborrhoeic dermatitis acts up around the base of my nose, I stop, in mid-shampooing, and rub some into the affected areas (carefully avoiding my eyes), and it seems to help that, too. I have no interest in changing shampoos again. I have tried many, and I think this is the right one.
Chronological disclaimer: It has been many years since I have used either Selsun Blue or Tegrin, and I expect that those products have been improved since then.
Strengths: Effective on dandruff, cleans well, smells great
Weaknesses: It does require a thorough rinsing
Conclusion: I like this shampoo because it controls what can be intense dandruff, and because it has a great, earthy scent. It is slightly more reasonably-priced than some competitors.
Recommended: Strongly, for people with dandruff, especially Seborrheic dermatitis.
