So you're trying to quit smoking? August 12, 2008 Quitting smoking is a very difficult task. The withdrawal symptoms and even the loss of an enjoyable habit are enough to make any smoker go crazy. Now, I've tried to quit a handful of times before with no success. My roommate quit smoking and said the gum really helped. He had a handful of pieces left over and gave them to me. I won't say that chewing the gum is as satisfying as smoking a cigarette, but it does help you keep your wits when you're having urges. Another nice thing about the gum is that it helps minimize withdrawal symptoms. I know people who have quit cold turkey and they got headaches, constipation, and a large increase in appetite. The worst I experienced is a general feeling of listlessness. Other than that, not too bad. However, read the instructions- you don't chew this gum like regular gum. Sometimes I would forget that fact and I would chew it like I would any other piece of gum and it nauseates your stomach (swallowing that much nicotine, I imagine, will do that). Whether you get ample gum to help you get through weeks or months, or even just a bit to help you through the first week (the first few days is the hardest), this stuff works. A word of the wise: Nicorette gum and other generic nicotine gums have the same active ingredient and they taste the same, so if you want to go with the generic, it'll work just fine. Now, the gum obviously won't help everyone, but for those who want to quit and find the urges unbearable (as I had), you might want to give this stuff a shot. Good luck to you!
