5 out of 5 stars Gets him up   October 10, 2008
Screaming Meanie 220

This product is fantastic. I bought it or my grandson for his birthday. He needed something to wake him up for school and this product finally does it!
It was also shipped very fast.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty much as described   September 16, 2008
Works as described.

The thing to remember is that this is designed for truckers who need to sleep for an hour or two and then go on driving, it's not really made for people who have to get up at the same time every morning. If you look at it from that viewpoint it's fine, if you look at it from the viewpoint of a conventional alarm clock or kitchen timer it's going to be disappointing.

Can easily be switched from a countdown timer to an alarm clock and back.

The medium setting is loud, the loud setting is visceral, I don't just hear it, I _feel_ it. If you need something that _will_ wake you up or that you can hear even in a relatively noisy environment this is it.

Setting seems a little complicated at first, but after a few times it's not a problem--the benefit of that complication is that it's difficult for the thing to accidentally get deactivated.

Does have a "snooze" feature that goes off a few minutes before the scheduled time.

Turning off the alarm requires that one be at least somewhat awake--it's not just hitting a button, you have to press three simultaneously and two are recessed and close enough together that they're difficult to get two fingers on but not quite so close that they can be pressed with one so that you have to concentrate a little to hit them. I see this as an advantage, but others may not.

Downsides:

The battery compartment cover gives the impression of being somewhat flimsy--it hasn't broken on me but it seems like it easily could.

The setting isn't held after it goes off--you have to reset it every time you use it.

1 out of 5 stars very frustrating gadget   August 8, 2008
Too complicated, does to many things. If you don;t use it every day, it takes too long to figure it out. even with the instrustions, I could not make it work. and I am an Elecrtical Eng that spent 20 years working on computers for IBM. Very frustrating. good luck.

2 out of 5 stars SM 220 New and Improved?   May 4, 2008
I have used an old SM for many years. The buttons finally gave out on it and I was forced to seek out a new one. I am far less impressed with the 'new and improved' version. It is far less user friendly; way too complicated for the 'timer' I expected. If you are looking for ease of use, I do not recommend this version. Sometimes 'more' is not necessarily 'better'.

5 out of 5 stars Great Alarm Clock... or Prank   February 11, 2008

I did not buy this product from Amazon, but I did own it at one point a few years back. I was in high school and just like any other normal kid, I hated waking up at 6:30 in the morning. My father bought this alarm clock for me and told me it was loud.

Wow. He was not joking. 120db? Yeh, it woke up me up. It also woke up my father in the other room. I had it hanging on a nail above my head when I slept and I was never late to school after that. Yeah, It's a rude awakening, but it totally worked. Heard it was really popular for truck drivers, as they might want to pull over to sleep but have to wake up and keep driving to make deadline.

I took it with me to college, and as it's actually a count down, and not really a clock, I set a 'count down' and left it behind the A/C vent in the girls' dorms down the hall we knew... Roughly 3 a.m....
They weren't able to get to it without unscrewing the vent.

All in all, this thing is seriously loud and does the job. Great product. Turning it off using the two buttons is frustrating to do with bloodshot morning eyes, and you actually have to do the math for the countdown to set it, but it works.

Highly recommended.
