 A protein bar you can actually look forward to eating August 25, 2008
I've always liked this bar, but Met-Rx reformulated it sometime in the last half year or so (?), and it was a huge improvement in taste and texture. You can easily tell the old and new apart, because the new version has nut fragments sitting in the caramel on top -- unlike what is currently shown in the packaging picture here on Amazon, it should be noted. The nut chunks also reduce the tendency for a large portion of the caramel on top to stick to the inside of the wrapper, which used to make the bar a bit annoying (and messy) to eat.
Any kind of scientifically formulated nutrition bar is going to have a hard time competing against a good old-fashioned cookie or brownie in the taste department, and some people just can't stomach the taste of anything in this genre. I'm one of the lucky ones who can, but still, some are definitely far better than others, and this Met-Rx product earns high scores. Knowing I have one of these waiting for me is great incentive to get through my workout -- I truly look forward to it, like a treat or reward for a job well done. And curiously, it manages to avoid the rubbery chewiness common to many protein bars, even some with far less protein. I literally get jaw cramps from eating some of those. None of that here, however.
I use these as a post-workout blast of protein/calories (followed by a glass of reduced-sugar chocolate soymilk, also rich in protein, and then a lot of water). There's no question these bars have a LOT of calories (including sugar), but that (plus the protein) is exactly what I need after a hard lift.
My only issue with these is the price (hence the four stars instead of five), but as I write this, Amazon is offering a box of 12 for around $20. That's the lowest price I've seen so far, other than when Safeway is running a 50% off sale in the stores, and even then it's only slightly cheaper. I have a disconcerting feeling these represent a massive profit margin for Met-Rx, but if we were to hold them accountable, we'd have to extend it to many other vendors in this field as well. Big protein bars are expensive.
These and other Met-Rx bars are a core component of my fitness nutrition regimen.

I am confident to say this is the best tasting protein bar that I have had! At times I feel guilty eating it because the caramel is to die for! I would definitely recommend that you try this bar!

Plenty of everything for a meal replacement. You can truly eat one of these for lunch and never feel hungry. When I am on the road all day, instead of getting a greasy burger, these are allot better and more filling for both breakfest and lunch. I really enjoy one after a good workout.

These things are the greatest - definitely the best bar around. They taste terrific, have a great shelf life and are big enough to be a meal replacement.
