Therapy could improve and prolong sight in those suffering vision loss

Ganglion cells from the eye generate noise as the light-sensitive photoreceptors die in diseases like retinitis pigmentosa. Now, neurobiologists have found a gene and drug therapy that may tamp down the sound, enhancing sight in mice using RP. These therapies could possibly extend the amount of useful vision in people who have degenerative eye diseases, such as, perhaps, age-related macular degeneration.
